We produced a collection of giant polystyrene balls for Theater Koblenz in Germany, ready for its creative team to transform into large-scale planets.
The spheres ranged from 700 mm to 1200 mm in diameter, creating an impressive mixture of sizes for the finished theatrical display. We manufactured each ball in our Cardiff workshop and fitted secure hanging points so that the completed planets could be suspended as part of the production.

Rather than supplying fully decorated props, our role was to create the lightweight polystyrene forms that provided the foundation for the theatre’s artwork.
Once completed, the balls were carefully packed and shipped from the UK to Koblenz. The theatre’s creative team then painted and detailed the spheres in Germany, transforming the plain polystyrene forms into a striking collection of giant planets.
This type of collaboration works particularly well for theatres, scenic artists and production teams that have their own specialist painting departments but need large, accurately shaped forms ready for decoration.
Lightweight Forms for Theatre Productions
Polystyrene is particularly useful for creating large suspended scenery and theatrical props. Even at 1200 mm in diameter, the spheres remain relatively lightweight, making them easier to transport, handle and suspend than similar forms made from many traditional materials.
We can manufacture large polystyrene balls and spheres in a wide range of sizes, with optional hanging points, surface preparation, coatings and painted finishes. They can be supplied as plain forms for scenic artists to finish themselves or completed in our workshop for use in theatre, TV, events, retail and exhibitions.
